Pre- and Postprocessing Instructions
Bill of materials:
-
1x 3D Printed face shield (bracket) that is compatible with a provided template
-
The front shield sheet for that type of face shield
-
1 Standard US letter-sized transparency sheets or report covers with the thickness of 2-10mil (0.002-0.01”, 0.05-0.25mm). This is similar to the sheets recommended in the Design that Matters Face Shield (DtM-v3.1) which was reviewed and recommended for clinical use.
-
1 template for your face sheild model (template files located under the "Extras" tab)
Instructions:
-
Use the PDF template for your face shield type to print onto a US letter-sized paper at 100% scale. Use the template with a transparency sheet to cut into the shape. For the Prusa template, do not cut the dotted lines. Punch or drill the 4 holes of each top shield. Note that one template can make 2 top shields. Save one top shield for your next face shield.
-
Put the top shield first. Depending on you face shield model, observe the followings:
-
The hooks or the tabs of the bracket should be near its top. In certain models, such as Prusa models, the tabs are at the bottom. In that case, turn the bracket upside down and use it in that orientation unless that is prohibited for that model.
-
Bracket design with the hooks will be able to hold the top shield in place during the assembly steps. In that case, work from one end to the other end.
-
A special note for “Budmen” and its variants. The shape of the outside rim of the bracket is closer to a rounded square shape, the assembly steps for putting the top shield on are slightly different. Between the first hole and the second hole, you will see that the edge of the top shield rests just at the top of the edge of the visor. Do not stretch that edge around the edge of the visor. Continue on to the next hole. Again, at the third hole and the fourth hole, the edge rests above the visor’s edge.
-
Most Prusa models use very short tabs to hold the sheet and require you to hole the sheet between the two middle tabs before attaching the end tabs. This makes it difficult to work on both top and front shields at the same time. There are two alternatives:
-
If there is a tape that is suitable for clinical use, tape under each of the two middle tabs to hole the top shield in place during the assembly and follow the above instruction. Do not reuse the tape.
-
If a tape is not available, skip step #3 and follow step #4 instead.
-
Put the front shield on the bracket
-
This is only applicable for Prusa models and their variants that use short tabs without hooks and you don’t have a tape suitable for clinical use, follow this instruction instead:
-
Cut from the edge of the top shield to the two middle holes along the 4 dotted line.
-
Put the front shield to the bracket first like you would normally do with the Prusa model, but with the tabs on the top instead (using it in an upside down orientation)
-
Insert the top shield behind the front shield and slot the two middle holes into the middle tabs of the bracket (see photo). Push it all the way until the holes touch the tabs.
-
Work on one end hole at a time. Slightly untie the end hole of the front shield from the end tab but continue to keep the tightness of the front shield such that the middle holes are still in place within the middle tabs. Use the other hand to put the end hole of the top shield into the end tab and quickly put the end hole of the front shield back to the end tab to lock both sheets in place. Then work on the other end.
