Acetabulum repaired from noisy data or diseased hip and separated from larger model to yield two bones post-print. They are two loose parts that can be printed separately and modified individually.
A mesh sphere was sized to conform to the projection of the viable, undisturbed segment of the proximal femoral head, and then a union boolean operation in Blender 2.73 was used between the sphere and the femur. some of the mesh faces of the femur external to the sphere were deleted such that a manifold surface would be present.
Shifting into edit mode, the spherical femoral head was slightly repositioned until successful boolean operation was possible via visual confirmation via changing of the color to the color for selectable mesh data representing the union operation result prior to application of the boolean modifier.
The boolean constructive modifier was applied. Then dynamic topology sculpting was used to re-triangulate areas of the mesh where there was insufficient poly count to perform sculpting to reform the boundary of the acetabular fossa to allow for further remixes and potentially fit-testing and viability test during 3D printing of one or both parts of the repaired segments.
