This 3 piece 3DVerkstan style shield (6 hole punch) has been made to fit a Welch Allyn Direct Ophthalmoscope. The use of a direct ophthalmoscope places health personnel very close to a patient due to the working distance of the device. However, due to the quick examination nature of a direct ophthalmoscope and its immediate aid to the clinical decision making process, the direct ophthalmoscope remains a useful tool for Ophthalmologists, Neurologists, and EDs that need a fast view of the optic nerve. Therefore, this shield was made to help protect the observer from potential COVID exposure. To the best of our knowledge, a shield for a direct ophthalmoscope has not been made as of the date of this submission.
This shield prints in 3 pieces and can be quickly assembled in office. On a Lulzbot TAZ 6 at PLA settings for high speed (0.380 μm @ 20% infill) with supports, the three pieces print in approximately 55 minutes. (Higher speeds can be used though this has not been validated as of the time of this submission). As mentioned above, the shield itself uses a 3DVerkstan 6 hole punch transparancy, thereby maintaining "standardization" with other Verkstan designs. The utility of the shield does not substantially interfere with the use of direct ophthalmoscope (as validated by our ophthalmologists) when oriented correctly. Please see the attached photos as to the proper way to orient the shield.
The attachments have been designed to be a tight fit so you will need some hand strength to get them together. A hand tool may make this easier if needed. The design is also removable as well should that be needed. Finally, the design can stay on the direct and not impinge on the ability to recharge the unit in a standard welch allyn well charger.
When printing, parts should be oriented flat. Supports are recommended for best fitment.
